Abstract

This research aims to study Valter Hugo Mãe's book a máquina de fazer espanhóis (2011) alongside with the thesis proposed by Eduardo Lourenço (2016), to whom it is necessary to rewrite the portuguese historical and cultural discourse in order to make the country adjust itself to its legitimate place in the European continent. As to comprehend how the romance revisits the history of Portugal, this study intends to demonstrate both images of an old and a new Portugal under the historical vision of two main characters: Silva the protagonist and Silva from Europe.
