Abstract

The focus analysis of this project is study the memory and the oblivion, noticing in which way such elements are related and are presented in Memória de Elefante, so that this makes the narrative approaching of Tadié (1994) defines as poetic narrative. According to the author, this narrative model explores poetry and novel traits, becoming, however, exempt of versification required in the first one (although without missing the rhythm that it being managed by memorialistics interruptions and by loneliness flagged throughout the narrative) and of linearity that is the fundamental characteristic of the second one. The elements that will be approached in this project and can contribute to this construction, but not necessarily make a narrative be poetic, refer to a subjectivity of time and the use of a highly figurative narrative-descriptive language, mainly through the use of metaphor and metonymy. The subjectivity time can be observed in the form the protagonist of Memória de Elefante, by the interior monologue, interrupts the narrator's ordered and objective discourse to presents his involuntary memories, producing a discourse that can be understood as fragmentary in some moments. Likewise, this procedure allows that two other essential elements for the poetic narrative understanding manifest itself in the novel: a character loneliness and incommunicability. Concerning the narrative figuration process, the use of metaphors and metonymies to the place and characters constructions make the descriptions converted into a tangle of complex and sophisticated images, meaning according to Tadié (1994), the creation of another literary world, less logic, ordered and rational. Such relations and stimulus created from memory and oblivion are given due to linguistic and discursive elements that will deepen and expand along the Portuguese author literary production. Therefore, our main objective is study and demonstrate how such elements appear configured in Memória de Elefante, creating a discourse that, though shyly, question totalitarian and organizer narrator image to cede position to an internal focus connected to the protagonist image.
