Abstract Memory depends directly on time to constitute itself and time depends on memory to remain. It's through the relationship of the subject with time that he constructs memory, enabling the preservation of his identity and the formation of wisdom. In Guimarães Rosa's novel, Grande sertão: veredas, this human temporal experience is showed and conveyed to us through the protagonist's remembrance. In this book, we can notice that the relationship between memory and time is indispensable to the construction of narrator's identity and to the unfolding of the narrative. The journey to the past done by Riobaldo is the attempt to find himself through what had happened and it's just become possible by the use of memory. This research has as objective to examine how occur the relationship between time and memory in Grande sertão: veredas and what is its importance to the narrative, to the reconstruction process of lived and to the constitution of narrator-protagonist's identity, Riobaldo. Achieving this objectives, the adopted methodology is based on bibliographic researchers, selection, reading and book report of two kinds of texts: Guimarães Rosa's work, mainly the selected novel, and studies that form the theoretical foundation of the research, clustered in three dimensions: a) theoretical essays about Guimarães Rosa's work in general, as those written by Antonio Candido, Cavalcanti Proença, Walnice Nogueira Galvão e Willi Bolle, and about the issue of the research, as those written by Donaldo Schüler e Jean-Paul Bruyas; b) propositions about the categories of narrative, as Gérard Genette's studies in Discurso da narrative; c) philosophical and/or psychological propositions about memory and time, having as base Henri Bergson's work, Matéria e memória, and Martin Heidegger's work, Ser e tempo.
