Abstract

In the 1960's, France witnessed the reduction of Brazilian literature translations if compared to the immediate post war period (Riaudel, 2018). However, one author received particular attention from French publishers and critics: Guimarães Rosa. In Brazil, the author caused excitement by the issue of Sagarana in 1946, and both Corpo de Baile and Grande Sertão: Veredas in 1956, which casts his name almost immediately to the literary foreign circles: translators and editors from the United States, France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Netherlands wrote to him asking to publish his novels and tales. Notwithstanding, the edition and reception of these works in each country were quite peculiar, because of the multiple factors implied in this process: historical and political moments, cultural relations among the countries, as well as editorial projects, editorial horizons and expectations of the critique of Brazilian literature. This process is accomplished through a net of people which mediate the relationship among author and his work and his readers: critics, publisher's readers, editors, literary agents, writers, professors, journalists and certainly translators.The last one are of special importance, because is through their rewriting that a book can spread out to another langage. This work profess to focus in a man who was the main Guimarães Rosa's translator into the French language in the 1960's: Jean-Jacques Villard. We will be looking for elements which could restore his biography and put him up into the literary horizon or his time. (AU)
