Abstract

This project aims to synthesize and characterize new monomers and polymers using Brazilian vegetable oil from macaw and baru nuts. These vegetable oils will be chemically modified by maleinization, epoxidation, and carbonation reactions. The emphasis is to provide value for bio-commodities, by modifying them into new materials, always following the Green Chemistry Principles. The work consists of three parts. The first is the reaction of vegetable oil and maleic anhydride (maleinization reaction). The second part is the epoxidation of the vegetable oil and then carbonation reaction using CO2. Finally, these modified vegetable oils will be reacted to form new polymers. Simultaneous Thermogravimetric/Derivative Thermogravimetry-Differential Thermal Analysis (TG/DTG-DTA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy (MIR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H-NMR) will be used to characterize all the monomers and polymers.
