Abstract

Nowadays, neuroscience is a global, high investment research field in both financial and academic matters. Functional neuroscience techniques are one of the main foundations of our current knowledge regarding the human brain functioning and are in constant development. Despite the great advances in neuroimaging, functional neuroscience studies are, for the most part, localized inside laboratories, artificial environments or magnetic resonance imaging rooms. It is desirable for functional studies to be made in real situations and at environments that are natural to the subjects, but most of the current functional neuroscience methods require rooms due to intrinsic limitations. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a non-invasive functional neuroscience technique that allows for miniaturization and for use outside the laboratory. The development of wearable NIRS systems has been studied for about 10 years and is considered a huge step for functional studies of the brain. Nevertheless, to this date, there are no wearable NIRS systems in Brazil (commercial or not). Our laboratory has pioneered the development and applications of NIRS in Brazil, and we plan to stick to this posture and develop a wearable NIRS system in Brazil. (AU)
