Abstract

Tarsonemidae is a large family of mites, with more than 40 known genera. It is a widespread group which has been found all around the world, adapted to virtually all types of biomes and several different feeding habits. Despite its importance, there is only one phylogenetic study for this family from the 1980's. Since then, new Tarsonemidae genera have been found and described, which makes this initial phylogeny hypothesis outdated. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate Tarsonemidae phylogeny again, gathering new taxa in the analysis and using microscope and advanced heuristic methods. The Department of Animal Taxonomy and Ecology (DATE), located at the Adam Mickiewicz University, PoznaD, Poland, is one of most regarded places for Acarology in Europe. Several tarsonemid types are deposited in this institution, which turns it in a preferable spot for the study of this family. Also Dr. Wojciech Magowski, head of DATE Acari Collection, is a worldwide known specialist on tarsonemids with several publications on this subject. This way, the main objective of this proposal is to study the Tarsonemidae types deposited in the DATE Mite Collection and other institutions around the world, through loaning. We intend to analyze internal and external morphological characters through microscopy techniques. After morphological analyses, we expect to add more information in order to reach an improved phylogenetic hypothesis about Tarsonemidae.
