Abstract

The objective of the present study is to investigate the process of incorporation and sequential remodelling of xenogenous bone blocks treated with argon plasma and fixed on the lateral aspect of the mandibular body of rabbits bilaterally from the histological and histomorphometric point of view. Twenty rabbits were divided into 2 groups composed of ten animals each, with euthanasia scheduled for 20 and 60 days, respectively. Prior to fixation, a block of xenogen bone (Osteobiol®, Tecnoss, Gaveno, Torino) was treated with argon plasma (test side) while the other was left untreated. Perforations of the cortical layer of the recipient bed were performed using a template. Each graft was fixed with a screw and covered with a collagen membrane (Evolution®, Tecnoss, Gaveno, Torino). After euthanasia of the animals, the specimens removed will be referred for histological and histomorphometric evaluation to obtain the values of new bone and formation, residual graft and connective tissue in the different periods. Differences between the test and control sides will be evaluated with the Student t test using the SPSS Statistics program (IBM Inc. Chicago IL, USA). The level of significance will be 5%.
