Abstract The ultimate goal of topology optimization is to obtain binary {0,1} solutions representing optimal structural layouts. However, the optimization problem with {0,1} design variables has been long considered hard or even impossible to be solved. This made popular the relaxation of the problem using continuous densities. On the other hand, one have seen a considerable increase in the amount of practitioners of the methods based on a clear separation between solid and void regions. Together with that, a future perspective of doing topology optimization with {0,1} variables is in solving multiphysics problems, in which separate physics and clear boundaries are the main characteristics of the problem. Recently, we have proposed the Topology Optimization of Binary Structures (TOBS) method. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the TOBS is the first method to obtain mesh independent and convergent solutions using formal mathematical programming and binary design variables. The aim of this project is to further develop the TOBS method. The objectives include an extensive literature review of the available integer linear programming solvers, their selection and implementation and the systematic choice of the input parameters. Finally, the method will be applied to a design-dependent multiphysics problem. (AU) | |
