Abstract

The principal objective is to study processes based on the in situ generations of hydroxyl radicals (H2O2/UV, O3/UV, and H2O2/O3/UV) for the mineralization of expired drug compositions containing amoxicillin. The controllable variables pollutant concentration; oxidizing agent (H2O2, O3) concentration; temperature; pH; intensity and spectral distribution of the light; irradiation geometry; the relationship between irradiated and non-irradiated volume; operating modes (batch, fed-batch, and continuous) are aimed to be investigated. Comprehension of the advanced oxidation processes will be achieved by the study of chemical (COD, TOC, and nitrogen), and economic data. Despite the progress of Advanced Oxidation Technologies - in recent years - as an alternative to conventional treatments of recalcitrant pollutants, which reinforces its technological, environmental and economic importance, still few papers present a systemic view and interest to achieve commercial applicability. The research project aims to contribute to meeting these needs, advancing in photochemical technology state-of-the-art to the treatment of industrial effluents. It is intended to contribute decisively to implement a new line of research at the Federal Institute of Sao Paulo (IFSP) focused on advanced wastewater treatment technologies while at the same time seeking the formation of young scientists.
