Abstract

Background: The hookah - a device designed for the use of tobacco - has gained strength especially among young people for the purpose of socializing and entertaining. Although it causes serious health consequences, even death risk, the use of hookah is understood as a less harmful form of tobacco use. In this scenario, there are still few Brazilian studies on the use of water pipe smoking, in such a way that the culture is still partially described. Add to this, there are no previous studies regarding the use of hookah apparatus for the use of other substances, or about an association with other drugs, and finally about the risk of the user to develop addiction to tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. Aim: Investigate the culture of use of hookah and the user in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo and ABC, with emphasis on the use of another drugs. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional, observational and qualitative study. An intentional sample selected by criteria will be recruited through key informants, gatekeepers, and snowball sampling technique. The risk criteria for alcohol, tobacco and other drugs dependence will be included in the research guide. Interviews will be recorded in neutral and safe environments. Then, the interviews will be transcribed and analyzed according to the assumptions of Bardin. Also will be realized the participant observation of the culture of use of narghile with record of the information in field diary.
