Abstract

Following the research done during my master's degree, this research proposal aims to locate, count, describe and explain synchronically the presence and absence of the conjunction ut in substantive subjunctive clauses that complement, in Plautus, verbs of a predefined set of semantic categories. I will consider: verbs of ordering and commanding, etc.; verbs of begging, requesting, etc.; verbs of advising; verbs of permitting; impersonal expressions such as optumum est, tempus est, decet, aequom est, opus est, usus est, necesse est, etc.; verbs of wishing, preferring, etc.; and also the verbs facio and uolo, whose analyses were already done. First, a searchable database with all these verbs and expressions followed by subjunctive will be done. Then, each token will be studied and classified according to relevant criteria: sex and type of character, metrical context, and especially morpho-syntactic features of the words under analysis. One of the hypothesis under scrutiny is whether verbs and expressions with deontic meaning (commands, whishes, concessions) prefer the juxtaposition of the subjunctive, in accordance with the behavior of facio and uolo, as described in my Master's thesis.
