Abstract

Body composition assessment is performed to quantify separately the ratio of lean mass, fat mass and bone mineral content of an individual. The importance of the evaluation of body composition is the fact that several studies prove that the amount of fat mass and its distribution are important factors for the development of cardiovascular events, metabolic syndromes, insulin resistance and development of chronic diseases in adults. The measurement of body composition may also be useful in assessing patients' nutritional status, assessing body fluids, evaluating body changes resulting from physical activity, and calculating the dosage of medications needed for each individual. The importance of the study of trabecular bone resistance is that this is one of the factors responsible for bone strength as well as bone mineral density. Bone mineral density can be measured by means of absorptiometry with dual emission with X-ray source (DXA).The main objective is to establish normative data on the body composition of Brazilian children and adolescents through DXA including visceral adipose tissue (VAT). The secondary objective is to assess bone strength in healthy children and adolescents.336 healthy children and adolescents of both sexes in a cross-sectional study including 168 males and 168 females and divided into two subgroups according to the pubertal stage in pre-pubertal and pubertal. Body composition will be analyzed by DXA using a Hologic (QDR 4500) and/or Lunar (DPX MD) apparatus. The parameters obtained are total fat mass (MGT), total lean mass/fat free mass (FFM), lean mass (MMA) obtained by adding the lean mass of the upper and lower limbs, fat mass (MG) in kilograms (Kg) and percentage, and android fat/gynoid ratio (A/G).
