Abstract

The Sintering process with application of the electric field, called Flash Sintering, is a new technology with substantial chances of reducing the energy consumption when compared to the conventional sintering process. In addition to saving energy, which makes the process more environmentally friendly, it is possible to reduce the sintering temperature by hundreds of degrees also reduce the time from a few hours to a few seconds, impacting which materials are needed for building the equipment for the process. Very important properties such as mechanical strength can be improved through this process, which tends to minimize grain size in the microstructure and produce high relative densities. In this project, the sintering kinetics of glass will be studied through the Clusters model and the results compared with those obtained experimentally. Considering the Joule effect, it is possible to calculate the instantaneous temperature in the specimen during sintering. The characteristics of the sintered samples by Flash Sintering vary with the process parameters, such as field strength and the amount of current passing through the sample. Low current levels do not allow the sintering process of the sample, while high values produces overheating and softening. Glasses in the Li2O-SiO2 binary system with different compositions and, therefore, different crystallization kinetics will be produced and studied for sintering process with and without electric field. With this process, we plan to understand the effect of the electric field on the sintering of glass compacts by viscous flow with concurrent crystallization. (AU)
