Abstract

The use of additive manufacturing has grown considerably in recent years. This was induced by the open source culture, which helped in the evolution of the projects, reducing the cost of prototyping and DIY (Do It Yourself) equipment. However, rapid prototyping, even though it is a simple and accessible technique, still generates waste and the filament presents a considerable cost in the process. To solve this problem, in 2012 the first DIY polymer extruder was created, it being possible from virgin and reprocessed polymers to obtain filaments for a 3D printer, which is important because it mainly acts on the cost of the material. However, the dimensional control of the filament in DIY extruders is a problem reported by several authors. Therefore, this work aims to design and assemble a filament diameter control system, using a roller system, an optical sensor and a filament winding machine. This mechanism will be assembly on a polymer extruder in the project final phase, which will use discarded material that was printed on the 3D printer designed by the group.
