Abstract

The intense process of urbanization of São Luís occurred in the twentieth century resulted in changes in the natural landscape that influence the local climate. In this sense, the present proposal aims to analyze the formation of the Atmospheric and superficial Heat Islands in the urban area of São Luís-MA, considering the dynamicity of the urban space, the physical and environmental characteristics and the different forms of land use and occupation. For this, the theory of the Urban Climate System (UCS), proposed by Monteiro (1976), particularly in the thermodynamic subsystem that involves data referring to observed and spatially distributed temperatures in the city considering, mainly as islands of urban heat, an intra-urban structure and thermal. To achieve the goals, the research will be divided into three different steps, however complementary, such as: identification and characterization of the urban environment; analysis of surface heat islands by means of remote sensing; analysis of atmospheric urban heat islands from fixed points. These results will be analyzed by relating them to the specific characteristics of the urban site, with the geoenvironmental dynamics, the forms of production of the space, the regional climatic dynamics and the specificities of the local climate. This study and its results may contribute with proposals that can subsidize public policies aimed at mitigating the heat islands in the city. (AU)
