To be Portuguese in times cabanos: the relations between Cabanagem and the Portuguese in Grão-Pará (1835-1840)

Abstract

This project has as main objective to understand how the Portuguese residents of Grão-Pará were affected by the Cabanagem. In other words, it is a question of investigating the relation and the point of view of the Portuguese in the face of a revolt that, in many historiographical works, is seen as a direct consequence of the growing Antilusitanism in the province. However, it is based on the hypothesis that Antilusitanism was part of a rhetoric used as a political instrument by a group of landowners to achieve space in the local political scene. To carry out this proposal, documents from consular institutions will be analyzed. These sources allow an approach that involves both the daily life of the province and the demands that arise within the cabano context, generated by diverse conflicts of interest. The documents to be analyzed were written by the Portuguese consul in Belém and also by the French and British consuls. These documents are part of different collections, guarded by the Portuguese Literary Guild in Belém and the Public Archive of Pará, respectively. In addition, sources from the Itamaraty Historical Archive will be consulted and, in the case of approval of this project, documents from the Torre do Tombo National Archive. (AU)
