Abstract

In this Project the post-doc fellow will transform Setaria italica and Setaria viridis overexpressing polyols genes in order to increase the concentration of osmoprotectants molecules. Polyols are described as potential osmoprotectants and might also act on the non-enzymatic antioxidant system. Therefore, polyols might be interesting target molecules to improve productivity in crops, especially considering hostile environments subjected to drought, for example. This is of particular importance when considered the future scenarios described by the International Panel of Climate Changes (IPCC). Another relevant hypothesis is that the overexpression of polyols might improve the sink strength, increasing carbon demand on sink organs. In this case, photosynthesis could be stimulated resulting in higher biomass accumulation.
