Abstract

This work intends to do the transcription of the manuscript attributed to Antônio Rodrigues (1520-1590), "Study of Architecture" of 1576, which nowadays belongs to the National Library of Portugal. Through the transcription of the document, this study aims to analyze the introduction and integration of the classic language of Italian matrix architecture, which attests the circulation of this culture in Portugal during the sixteenth century, as well the transit of architects between Italy and Portugal during Cinquecento. It is also intended to understand the character of the architect and military engineer Antônio Rodrigues in the Portuguese court of Dom Sebastião and Filipe II, starting from the formation of a "school" of architecture professionals constituted to defend the values of the Portuguese Empire.
