Abstract

Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by the protozoan Leishmania; the transmission to the vertebrate host occurs during the blood repast of the phlebotomine vector. Different species of Leishmania may cause the three main clinical manifestations of the disease, which are the cutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral forms. In Brazil, we have L. braziliensis as the main species involved in the cutaneous (mucosa and cutaneous) form of the disease. L. braziliensis induced skin lesions in the murine experimental models (BALB/c, C57Bl/6 and etc.) are self-healing, but the presence of organ parasites and increased expression of pro inflammatory cytokines (IL-12 and IFN-³) and reduced regulatory cytokines (IL-4 and IL-13) are reported, thus suggesting macrophage polarization to M1/M2 phenotypes. In this master's project we aim to evaluate the macrophage polarization in diferente tissues and to analyze histopathological aspects of lesions and parasitic load of mice infected with L. braziliensis standard strain and clinical isolate.
