Abstract

The objective of this research is the study of the general exhibitions organized by the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts during the Second Reign. With the series of 26 exhibitions that took place between 1840 and 1884, we intend to understand its modifications over time, to analyze its structure regarding its organization, presentation of the works of the artists associated with the institution and the external ones, as well as the formation of the juries for the acceptance and awarding of the works of art. We also seek to investigate how public, critics, collectors and the development of art collecting are articulated within and by the general exhibitions. The research will be conducted from institutional documentation, critical reception of exhibitions and relevant literature. The study of the exhibition series is critical to build a clearer view of the nineteenth century artistic production and to understand to what extent such events shaped an artistic system in Rio de Janeiro and led the discussions on art in Brazil in the period.
