French artists in Rio de Janeiro: formation in France and circulation of artistic models in Brazil between 1840 and 1884

Abstract

A large number of French artists resided in Rio de Janeiro during the 19th century. The General Exhibitions of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, which took place between 1840 and 1884 (respectively, the beginning and the last shows of the imperial period) reveal their insertion in the Brazilian artistic system and the works produced, leading us to understand their performance in the court Of d. Pedro II beyond the academic universe. These artists opened ateliers, attended public and private orders, participated in private exhibitions, opened art schools, collected and maintained a close relationship with imperial politics. We don't know, however, about his artistic life prior to his arrival in Brazil. It is intended, in this project to be developed in the EHESS - École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, in Paris, to research its formations in the archives and libraries of France, as well as to understand its performance in the French system and the artistic models brought by him to Rio de Janeiro, to understand how his circulation was given, as well as his methods and the works produced in the scope of Brazilian art and culture.
