Understanding how ecological interactions affect origination and extinction of clades is essential for the understanding of how ecological processes can generate diversification patterns in large scales of time and space. The use of models is a necessary strategy for the study of evolution on the geological scale, mainly due to the limitations of the fossil record. This project aims to develop a modeling framework for the study of the macroevolutionary effects of ecological interactions. Using models that incorporate the effect of interactions between and within clades on the rates of diversification, I will investigate patterns of diversification and phenotypic disparity that emerge under varying conditions. Models with different assumptions and parametrizations will be examined according to their dynamics and their capability of reproducing diversification patterns observed in mammalian clades. The development of these models will contribute to the understanding of macroevolutionary phenomena in terms of their underlying mechanisms. (AU)
