Abstract

This research intends to identify and analyze the temporal distances of the human flow through the Luso American and Brazilian territory through the postal system streams engendered by the Rio de Janeiro Post between 1798 and c.1831. It is a research developed from an earlier collective project, The spacetimes in Brazil of XVIIIth and XIXth centuries, developed since July 2016 at the Brazil and the World System Studies Laboratory (FFLCH-USP). My undergraduate research, funded by FAPESP, The spacetimes in Brazil: territoriality and plurality of historical times (c.1820 - c.1830), has examined the time acceleration during the transformation of the colonial territories into national territory. As a development of such investigation, this proposal aims to examine the shortening of space in articulation with the acceleration of the time of distance communication through the analysis of the postal system. The spacetimes constitute one form of spatial experience through temporal distances. The temporal topographies refer to the heterogeneous set of spacetimes that ground a social structure of motion on space. The exam of the Rio de Janeiro Post allows the analysis of an institution responsible for the circulation of information whose temporal topography reveals the demand for a new velocity. We hope to contribute to the historiography of historical times during the formation of the Brazilian territory investigating the temporal distances that configured the Luso American and Brazilian distance communication territoriality.
