Abstract

This research aims to investigate Durkheim's late approach to religion within the development of the sociologie religieuse research programme, undertaken by Hubert and Mauss in the Année sociologique, in the light of the Durkheimian framework of the division of labor. In this regard, a set of Durkheim's works between 1906 and 1913 regarding religious phenomena was selected, mainly the creation of The Elemental Forms of Religious Life (1912). The main idea is to identify how Durkheim reinterpreted Hubert and Mauss' previous achievements in The Elemental Forms of Religious Life, in order to measure how Durkheim's theoretical shift fits in the research programme carried out by Hubert and Mauss. This is crucial for for the investigation of 1) the transformation of Durkheim's theory of religion under the influence of the works of Hubert and Mauss; and 2) Hubert and Mauss' construction of a theory of social action incorporated in Durkheim's theory. Thus, by testing these hypotheses concerning the impact of Hubert and Mauss' production on Durkheim's social theory, we will be able to ascertain if there was a collaboration between them in the Durkheimian school.
