Abstract

The detection of secondary caries lesions is more challenging than primary caries. The traditional methods used for clinical diagnosis of dental caries are subjective, so there is a continuous effort to use newer techniques to diagnose carious lesions. Therefore, this in vitro study aims to compare traditional methods used for the detection of secondary caries with the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in detecting caries around resin composite restorations in permanent teeth. For this, one hundred restored teeth will be collected from the Department of Cariology & Endodontics from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The teeth will be evaluated with the visual inspection according to the ICDAS-CARS criteria, with the radiographic method and using the OCT. After completion of all the assessments with each caries detection method, the teeth are going to be cut longitudinally and examined under a stereomicroscope for the histological method (reference standard). Both the inter-examiner and an intra-examiner agreement will be assessed using "Weighted Kappa" statistics. Sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy parameters will be calculated. Spearman's correlation test will be applied to evaluate the correlation between the methods. (AU)
