Abstract

Angiogenesis is the process by which new blood vessels are formed from pre-existing blood vessels. In adults, angiogenesis is restricted to specific circumstances, such as wound healing and female cycle. However, this process plays a key role in pathological conditions such as Cancer and Retinopathy. Using an animal model of oxygen induced retinopathy and RNAseq, we identified several genes with a differential expression in pathological angiogenesis. One of these, was the Oncostatin-M Receptor Beta (OSMR²). OSM is a member of the IL-6 Family of Cytokines. It binds to OSMR² and gp130 to promote a downstream cascade of cellular events. OSM has been associated with several types of cancer and it is known to increase the expression of metalloproteinases and VEGF, being, by this way, a link between tumor invasion and angiogenesis. Because it is a target present in both angiogenic vessels and tumor cells, we decided to explore the cytokine and its receptor as a potential target for rug development. Until this moment, there are no drugs against these molecules. In order to accomplish our goals, we are going to establish a platform based on the combination of both peptide and antibody phage display, to rationally develop Biopharmaceuticals against these molecules. We hope to such Biopharmaceuticals will find important applications in the modulation of pathological angiogenesis and tumor growth. (AU)
