Abstract

The effectiveness of the orthodontic treatment of children and adolescents, among other factors, depends on the identification of the most appropriate intervention timing. Even though orthodontists are able to use hand-wrist radiographs or lateral telerradiographs for this purpose, general dental practitioners and pediatric dentists still do not have reliable and practical parameters to enable timely referrals of potential orthodontic patients. Therefore, this study has the objective of evaluating the usefulness of radiographic and clinical dental parameters for the identification of specific growth stages. In order to comprise the study sample, 250 sets of hand-wrist and panoramic radiographs, as well as lateral telerradiographs and intra-oral pictures will be randomly extracted from the files of the Guarulhos University Orthodontic Graduate Program. Calcification stages of inferior canines, premolars, and second molars will be identified in the examination of the panoramic radiographic examinations. The individual presence/absence of individual permanent teeth and dental groups will be documented during the evaluation of intra oral superior and inferior oclusal photographs. Categories and evaluations from both reference exams will be correlated with gold standard assessments derived from hand-wrist and lateral telerradiographs. Furthermore, accuracy tests (sensitivity, specificity positive, and negative predictive values) will be performed towards the identification of practical and useful parameters for the detection of specific maturational stages.
