Abstract

In addition to the standard set of chromosomes (A), about 15% of eukaryotes presents supernumerary chromosomes (B). Despite its poor composition in protein-coding genes, the description of transcripts from B chromosomes has changed the view that they are inert structures in the genome. Among fish, in Astyanax genus, the greatest diversity of B chromosomes is found, with the occurrence of micro to macro B chromosomes and different morphologies. Therefore, the present project intends to investigate the composition of protein-coding genes in B chromosome variants in populations of the genus Astyanax, as well as evaluate the expression profile of these genes in +B and 0B individuals. Thus, it will be possible to test the hypothesis that variants of B chromosomes of Astyanax originated from the same formation process and characterize the effects in gene expression caused by the presence of these supernumerary elements.
