Abstract

Different dispersion and functionalization techniques have already been employed in order to reduce the aggregates formed by carbon nanotubes (NTCs) when in contact with water. There are methods of chemical and physical functionalization, which aims to modify the surface layer of NTCs, enabling the binding of other molecules or substances. The use of ultrasound and strong acids can cause damage to the structure of the NTC transforming it into amorphous carbon. However, the use of cold plasma PECVD can be a good alternative, because it deposits a thin film in the surface layer of the nanotubes without causing damage to their structure. This fact makes the functionalization the first step to make this material ideal for use in the medical field because this pre-functioning will allow the binding of other molecules to the NTCs, such as antineoplastic agents.
