Abstract

Technological advances in neonatal care have been growing in recent years, as concerns about the development and quality of life of extremely premature infants at birth. Extreme premature and/or low birth weight infants are considered at risk for development and hearing monitoring is an essential follow-up for early detection of hearing disorders that may impact language development. Objective: To characterize the auditory development of extreme and low birth weight premature children and to relate to language development. Method: There will be as participants, 20 parents and children with a gestational age below 33 weeks and/or weight less than 1500grs at birth and who was born in a teaching hospital of a city in the interior of the state of São Paulo. Patients' medical records will be analyzed regarding maternal history, child's hospitalization history, and hearing monitoring. The collected data will be analyzed and related to language evaluation. Knowledge about hearing development at this critical developmental age will provide guidance to the multidisciplinary team, parents, and propositions for early intervention. (AU)
