Abstract

Cartography, as a set of techniques used to represent the elements and phenomena evidenced in the geographic space, is as old as the very existence of human civilization and has since undergone several changes, becoming, today, more dynamic and widespread, which affected the existing relationship between mapping and society in general. This project proposes the elaboration of a diagnosis of the existing basic cartography in the municipalities of the Metropolitan Region of Campinas, regarding its availability and quality, seeking to understand the role of cartography in public administration. The methodology to be applied is based on bibliographic survey and review, in the acquisition of cartography available through visits and interviews in the prefectures, besides analyzing the quality of cartographic data in different parameters. Thus, it is intended to construct a diagnosis of the basic cartography available in each of the municipalities, understand what roles and possibilities it plays and can subsidize in the administration and planning of each municipality, as well as in the context of the metropolitan region as a whole.
