Abstract

The protective effects of omega 3 fatty acids (É3) have been the subject of studies for decades. Studies have shown that É3 has an effect on the reduction of inflammatory frames, on the reduction of platelet aggregation, on the improvement of insulin sensitivity, on the immune system, among others. Among the mechanisms by which É3 acts, the activation of the GPR120 receptor shows to be important. The receptor, once activated, is able to attenuate the inflammatory process through the block of the intracellular NFkB signaling pathway, consecutively reducing the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine genes, such as TNF±, IL1², iNOS etc. Works from our group demonstrated the presence of GPR120 in the hypothalamus, liver, muscle, adipose tissue, aorta and retina. In addition, GPR120 has been described in immune system-specific cells, such as Kupffer cells and infiltrated macrophages into the endothelial wall. In the Central Nervous System (CNS), microglia play an important role in brain development, memory and cognition, control of food intake and energy expenditure. Once the activity of this receptor in these specific tissues has been demonstrated, it is hypothesized that the GPR120 receptor expressed on the surface of macrophages/microglia can be activated by É3 fatty acids and therefore its polarization ordered to an anti-inflammatory profile (M2). If this hypothesis is confirmed, this could constitute new strategies of drug/nutritional intervention. Perhaps the GPR120 is one more piece, fundamentally involved in the control of the immune system. (AU)
