Abstract

Obesity is spreading globally and uncontrollably. The imbalance between food intake and energy expenditure culminates in excessive accumulation of body mass. Chronic inflammation and low grade seems to be the phenomenon that disrupts the fine control of energy balance, exerted by the hypothalamus. The inflammation is systemic and insidious, spreading these malignances throughout the body, supporting the development of diseases related to obesity such as insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, hypertension and atherosclerosis. The mechanisms involved in genesis and spreading of inflammation involve from surface receptors of the immune system to complex intracellular machinery. The metabolic overload begins Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress (ERE) process, further intensifying the inflammatory process. In the vascular system, insulin resistance complements the genesis of atherosclerosis and inflammation by the ERE. However, recently described receptors as GPR120, can recognize fatty acids as omega-3 (W3) and transduce anti-inflammatory signaling cross the brain and adipose cells, restoring insulin signaling. Studied for decades in endothelial and vascular tissue, the mechanisms of action related to W3 benefits are still poorly understood. Therefore, it is possible that GPR120 receptors trigger opposite actions in this tissue, disrupting the atherogenic process, even under conditions of high consumption of calories, as occurs in industrialized and modern societies. W3 fatty acids or synthetic GPR120 agonists, such as GW9508, may open new exploratory avenues, therapeutic or protective, against cardiovascular events such as atherosclerosis. (AU)
