Effectiveness of methods of evaluation of manual skills for pre-clinical training in dentistry

Abstract

This study aims to verify the effectiveness of a manual dexterity assessment method for preclinical training in Dentistry. For this, an experimental study will be carried out, where the interest variable will be the manual dexterity measured quantitatively by the methods O'Connor Finger Dexterity Test - Model 32021, Purdue Pegboard Test - Model 32020A, Dental Manual Dexterity Assessment - DMDA, Class One Cavity Preparation Assessment - COCA e Class One Composite Resin Restoration Assessment - COCRA and qualitatively by collective subject discourse. The sample will consist of students from the last in the undergraduate course in Dentistry. Descriptive statistical analysis and verification of normality and homoscedasticity assumptions will be performed. The mean score obtained in the evaluation of the quality of the preparations and restorations will be considered as the gold standard, and the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy and positive and negative predictive values of the tests will be estimated. A ROC curve will be constructed, and estimated cutoffs that maximize the predictive ability of skill tests for each quality rating. The area of the curve (AUROC) will be calculated to determine the discrimination capacity of skill tests. Calculations will be performed per point and 95% confidence interval. (AU)
