Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogen associated with infections affecting the respiratory tract and colonization by community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) is one of the major obstacles in the treatment of staphylococcal diseases as these microorganisms are resistant to all. ²-lactam antimicrobials. Populations living in rural settlements are subject to poor conditions and may be colonized by S. aureus and CA-MRSA. Thus, the aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of CA-MRSA in a vulnerable population living in a rural settlement in Oeste Paulista. Staphylococcus aureus will be isolated from the nasal and oropharyngeal cavities of individuals under 18 years old and over 60 years old living in a rural settlement in West Paulista and the isolates will be submitted to disk diffusion testing to determine antimicrobial susceptibility. S. aureus will be characterized for the presence of mecA and pvl genes by PCR technique and typing of mecha staphylococcal chromosome cassette (SCCmec) by multiplex PCR. For the analysis of the results, the Chi-square test will be applied and the confidence interval will be 95% and the p values <0.05 will be considered as statistically significant.
