Abstract

The project aims to analyze the coping strategies used by indigenous women against the violence it suffered in the Portuguese overseas environment. The chronological cut refers to the XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries, focusing on the period of the Visits of the Holy Office to the Portuguese-Brazilian territory. The goal is to verify the contexts of violence against the indigenous women, observing whether there was any link with the position occupied by those women in their social relations, besides analyzing the reactions of this women in relation to the violence they suffered. To this, we will use the inquisitorial documentation, because even if institutional, it allows us to spy over the inquisitor's shoulder and have a glimpse the position of those who find themselves dominated, pointing to an indigenous condition different from that of barbarism or submission that the immediate message of the colonial discourse shows. We perceive the lack of work within the production of Indigenous History that focuses on indigenous women, so as to visibility to this segment, emphasizing gender violence and power relations which were submitted within the colonial context. The mapping of this problem in the Inquisitorial sources, therefore, promises to contribute to identify in the Iberian society of the modern era the specific contexts of violence experienced by the indigenous women, and to identify their reaction, their modus operandi, before such aggressions.
