Abstract

Climate change, increasingly evident nowadays, lead to deleterious effects on crop production. Although this topic is world-widely studied, information on the impacts of climate change on plant diseases, such as rusts, is rare. Particularly few studies have been conducted to quantify the damage caused by rust pathogens on their hosts under adverse environmental conditions. This topic needs to be explored, due to the importance of this diseases group in crop production. According to estimates of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), in a future scenario, increase in temperatures, drought periods and extreme events will become more and more frequent. It has been already reported in the literature, in some pathosystems, that warmer temperatures and water stress increase disease intensity. The myrtle rust (Austropuccinia psidii) is an important disease of guava and other species of the family Myrtaceae. Although this disease represents a global threat, there is little available information about its epidemiology in guava and about the effect of abiotic stresses on the disease development. In this scenario, the objective of this study is to evaluate the impacts of water deficit on the monocycle of guava rust and its effects on host photosynthesis. For this, potted guava plants will be exposed or not to biotic (A. psidii) and abiotic (moderate water deficit) stresses, in single or combined situation. To evaluate the disease behavior and the damage caused to the guava, the monocyclic components and gas exchange variables related to plant photosynthesis will be quantified. (AU)
