Abstract Recent researches have shown that, in general, the combined treatment of antibiotics exhibits greater performance than monotherapies. In particular, the treatment of bacterial infections that may cause meningitis - a disease that presented nearly 110 thousands new cases between 2000 and 2010 in Brazil - showed superior results of the combined treatment with ceftriaxone and levofloxacin, when compared to standard treatment. However, levofloxacin, a third generation antibiotic from fluorquinolones class, cause adverse effects, such as nerve and tendon damages. To overcome these, it is useful the application of nanotechnology. In such a context, this research project propose to develop processes and formulations of nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC), the newest generation of lipid nanocarriers, to a combined parenteral administration of levofloxacin and ceftriaxone. The development of process and product will involve design of experiments to study interactions drug-excipient and reach information about their influences on potency/synergy between the drugs; physicochemical analysis; cellular viability and permeability in a mimetic model of a human blood brain barrier.
