Abstract

In vertebrates, blood pressure modulation depends on short- and long-term adjustments. There are important mechanisms for fast blood pressure control, the baroreflex mechanism; reflexes started by cerebral ischemia; reflexes of low-pressure areas; among others. The baroreflex works with mechanic sensors located in big arteries walls. These sensors are intramural phasic proprioceptors stimulated by vessel stretching. So, they can recognize vessels walls distension and, therefore, provide fast blood pressure corrections. The baroreflex itself is modulated to adjust increases of metabolic demand. For instance, it is adjusted to support the metabolic increasing for physical activity or for the SDA (Specific Dynamic Action). In many vertebrate species, SDA starts the highest aerobic increment. Understanding the support to such demands is important for discussions on physiological capacities. Vertebrates able to ingest big preys, like some species of reptiles and amphibians are better adequate to study functional modulations during SDA. This project aims to analyze variations in the baroreflex mechanism during SDA in bullfrog, Lithobates catesbeianus. For that, we are going to use the Sequence Method, an analytical tool that allows to evaluate the baroreflex in dynamic protocols. Besides the analyses on the baroreflex modulation, this project has the potential to verify the use of the Sequence Method, as a tool for dynamic use in animals; beyond producing relevant data about the physiological support for big aerobic metabolic demands in vertebrates.
