Abstract

Traditional on-off-keying (OOK)-based optical communications systems have met data transmission capacity requirements over a long period of time. However, they fail to meet the ever increasing capacity requirements. The present project aims to evaluate polarisation modulation, also known as Stokes space modulation, to increase spectral efficiency in optical communications. In particular, the sensitivity of the polarised modulated signals to the main impairments of standard single-mode fiber channels (chromatic dispersion, nonlinearities and attenuation) as well as to the noise added by the receiver will be evaluated. System performance will be quantified using the bit error rate obtained by computer simulations based on Matlab-VPI Transmission Maker co-simulation.
