Recently, optical communications systems have advanced quickly thanks to the combination of coherent detection and digital signal processing. These new optical transceivers are able to flexibly adjust parameters such as code rate, modulation format and symbol rate. At the same time, intensive research efforts have attempted to increase the optical fiber capacity by means of space division multiplexing (SDM), where different signals are transmitted in parallel through separate "spaces." These spaces can be fiber cores, in the case of a multicore fiber, or mode groups, in the case of a few-mode fiber (FMF). The future optical networks will have to be prepared to these new technologies, and novel resource allocation algorithms are needed. This project aims at developing resource allocation techniques for optical networks with SDM. Network performance metrics such as blocking probability or utilization factor will be investigated. The analysis will consider nodal architectures for SDM and the physical layer constraints of multicore and/or few-mode fibers. (AU)
