Ichnofossiliferous record in sandstones near Pacujá-CE

Abstract

This research continues the studies of ichnofossils found in sandstones located in the vicinity of the town of Pacujá-CE that was previously introduced on the project "Icnofósseis da Formação Pacujá (Cambriano, Bacia Jaibaras, CE-Brasil)", suportted by PIBIC (CNPq). Both the stratigraphic unit and the interpretation of such fossils show controversy on the existing literature, being inserted on Pacujá Formation of the Jaibaras Basin, that consist of Eopaleozoic records, as well on the Ipu Formation of the Serra Grande Group, located on the Parnaíba Basin, and consist of silurian deposits. This ichnofossils records are the only evidence of benthic biota found on the region, wich represents a challenge once the morphology of this organisms are not known, however the ichnofossils are indispensable for the understanding of this organisms living habits. In short, the study of such assembly could lead to the undersatnting of major questions like paleoenvironmental context, the age and therefore the basin in which it's located as well as possible correlation with other fossil record.
