Abstract

This project has as its object of analysis Jean Rhys' fifth novel, Wide Sargasso Sea, which was first published in England in 1966. Its study is motivated not only by the work's singular nature, placing it in a unique position in relation to Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre (1847), which acted out as its catalyzer, but also by the aim of understanding and revealing the formal impacts arising from the context which the narrative evokes. To this end, the research will focus on the character of the protagonist, whose subjectivity internalizes and reveals traits of this process. The methods of analysis proposed by Georg Lukács and Antonio Candido will be used as guidelines and will assist in examining the historical complexities that surround the novel and are also manifested on the level of the literary form, distinguishing it from other productions and positioning Wide Sargasso Sea as a singular work.Keywords: Jean Rhys; Novel; Protagonist; Subjectivity; Literary form; Historical process.
