Abstract

This research project proposes the location, serialization and analysis of engravings of religious themes contained in English emblem books, from 1569 to 1646. During the 16th and 17th centuries England underwent a Religious Reformation and a confessional dispute. The division of the Christian faith in both Europe and the British Isles resulted in the elaboration of different confessions by Catholics and Protestants seeking to strengthen their religious spaces in society. In this context of dispute, one of the means used for the propagation of religious precepts was the use of printed materials, such as emblem books and the engravings contained therein. We therefore intend to understand issues of the English confessional dispute by studying religious engravings of emblem books published in England or in English at the time.
