Evaluation of antimicrobian activity of the alecrim extract on multi-resistant cepas of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Abstract

The loss of bacterial sensitivity to conventional antibiotics is progressively occurring, posing a major challenge for the control of infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria with alarming global clinical and economic consequences. Therefore, the emergence of alternative antimicrobial therapies is necessary to overcome this problem. Studies have shown that several plant extracts have antimicrobial action, but in multiresistant bacteria the investigation is still very discreet. Thus, the present study proposes to evaluate in vitro the antimicrobial activity of Rosmarinus officinalis glycolic extract (Rosemary) on planktonic cultures and monomicrobial biofilms of multiresistant strains and standard strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. To verify the antimicrobial activity of the extract, a broth microdilution test, recommended by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), standard M11-A6, will beapplied. The most effective concentrations will be analyzed on biofilms for 5 min and 24 h and biomass will be quantified by Crystal Violet test and cell viability by MTT test. The results will be statistically analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey Test (p d 0.05).
