Abstract

The aim of this project is to analyze the deformation of the Espinhaço Supergroup in the western portion of Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, by the construction and restoration of balanced geological cross sections, and the analysis of the finite deformation suffered by the rocks. These objectives will be achieved by applying geometric techniques in the construction of cross sections and verification of their balance, in addition to determinations of the finite deformation in oriented sections of outcrops, samples and thin-sections. The application of these methods should allow the calculation of the tectonic shortening, as well as the original thickness and length of the lithostratigraphic units. The Espinhaço Supergroup in the western portion of Chapada Diamantina has good outcrops, detailed maps, with good structural control, vast available literature, gentle to open folds and low-grade metamorphism, with wide preservation of sedimentary structures, making easier the application of the geometric principles used in the construction of balanced cross sections and in the deformation analysis. The results should provide new parameters for the discussion about the models of tectonic evolution of the Aulacogeno do Paramirim, with implications for the understanding of its relations with the São Francisco Craton and the adjacent Brasiliano orogens.
