Abstract

In Software Engineering (SE), researchers have widely adopted Systematic Literature Reviews (SLR) to improve the quality of their scientific contributions. The constant evolution of the SE area and publication of new studies lead the community to devise ways to reduce the cost of conducting SLR. In this context, SLR represent a resource of scientific evidence that should be widely managed by researchers. The sustainability concept was introduced by creating it in ecology to help humans to manage and preserve natural resources. Since the 80's, the discussion about sustainability has presented benefits in several areas, not only in ecology. The concept of sustainability has been adapted to other areas to help the community creates sustainable products and environments. Problem: Conducting and updating an SLR are a time-consuming tasks and are considered an expensive activity in terms of resource used. One of the main costs is related to the use of researchers' time. Then, it is in fact necessary to perform SLR economically sustainable. Objective: The main goal of this PhD project is to introduce the concept of economic sustainability in SLR. More specifically, we will propose a framework containing metrics to measure time and effort to conduct SLR as well as guidelines to support researchers to conduct economic sustainable SLR. Method: Two main activities will be conducted: (i) definition and characterization of the concept of economic sustainability in SLR; (ii) establishment of the framework to support researchers create economic sustainable SLR. To evaluate this definition and the framework, we will conduct surveys and case studies together with a qualitative analysis. Results: As main result, it is expected that the use of the framework will minimize the time and costs to conduct and update SLR. (AU)
