Abstract

The prevalence of septic shock is increasing in the last decades, and still has a high rate of mortality. Among the survivors, it is frequent the necessity of hospital readmissions, decreased quality of life, development of frailty, and increased mortality. Frailty is characterized by loss of physical and cognitive function that leads to poor outcomes. Several frailty scores have been validated and used at the hospital, among them the Frail Score (FS). Nowadays, new biomarkers have been used in the identification of muscle depletion and frailty, including the extracellular heat shock protein 72 (eHsp72). However, there is no study that evaluated the effects of frailty on the prognosis of patients with septic shock. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate the association between frailty, and the values of eHsp72, with length of ICU stay and with mortality in patients with septic shock. Patients with septic shock, older than 18 years, of both sexes will be included at ICU admission. We plan to include 92 patients. At ICU admission demographic, clinical and laboratorial data will be recorded. Within 24 hours of ICU admission, blood sample will be collected to measure eHsp72, and the FS will be applied. The length of ICU stay and ICU mortality will also be recorded. We will perform Student t test or Mann-Whitney according to variables distribution. For categorical variables we will use Chi-square or Exact Fisher test. Multiple linear and logistic regression will also be performed. The significance level will be 5%. (AU)
