Abstract

Studies have shown that the inhalation of cigarette smoke (CSF) causes periodontitis worsening, but the effect of inhalation of the hookworm smoke (IFN) in the periodontium has not yet been evaluated. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the effects of IFN on the bone microstructure of rats submitted to experimental periodontitis (PE), comparing their effects to IFC. Sixty male rats, divided into the following groups: control (C), only with experimental periodontitis (PE), only exposure to IFC (IFC), only exposure to IFN (IFN), PE and exposure to IFC , PE and exposure to IFN (PE + IFN). The animals of the IFC, IFN, PE + IFC and PE + IFN groups will be exposed to their respective fumes 3 times a day for 8 minutes for 44 days. Thirty days after the start of the experiment, the groups PE, PE + IFC and PE + IFN will receive ligation in the lower first molars, maintained for 14 days, to induce periodontal disease. All animals will be euthanized 44 days after the start of the experiment and the jaws will be collected for microtomographic analysis. The Alveolar Bone Level, the Bone Volume, the Bone Porosity, the Number of trabeculae and the trabecular spacing will be measured. Data will be expressed as mean and standard deviation and will be used Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) followed by the Tukey post-hoc test for comparisons between groups. It is hoped that this study will demonstrate the harmful effects of inhalation of narghile smoke in the alveolar bone, allowing to guide the population as to the harm of their consumption. (AU)
